Mel’s Journey in the Outdoor Retail Industry
Mel’s extensive career in retail began during his college freshman year at a local Mississippi Sporting Goods store. A brief stint at Foot Locker followed, but his path took a turn. After earning a Master of Arts degree and founding and editing a successful monthly tabloid, he moved to Washington, D.C., in 1993, stepping into the unfamiliar world of outdoor specialty retail.
From Novice to Industry Insider
Despite having minimal camping experience, Mel’s shoe business knowledge and passion landed him a job at Casual Adventure, an iconic outdoor store in Arlington, VA. Working alongside Neil Stern and Dave Haggerty, he developed a strong bond with the team and the industry.
A Foray into Sales Representation
In 1996, Mel joined Lightspeed Marketing as a sales representative. This role provided invaluable experience, working with top outdoor brands like Osprey, Salomon, Cascade Designs, and MSR, and covering a territory spanning from Florida to Nashville and beyond.
Marriage, Management, and Mentorship
Marrying Melinda Smith, whom he met at Casual Adventure, brought Mel back to Arlington and a GMM position at the store. However, the allure of sales representation returned in 2000 with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent The North Face. Under the guidance of mentors like Mike Miller, Bob Cissell, and Bill Brown, Mel honed his skills and deepened his industry knowledge.
Founding High Mileage Sales
In January 2003, Mel partnered with his longtime friend and coworker Jay Curwen to establish High Mileage Sales, a full-service agency representing top-tier outdoor brands.
Continued Success and Collaboration
As High Mileage Sales approaches its 22nd anniversary in 2025, Mel continues to represent renowned brands like Merrell, Chaco, Farm to Feet, and Klean Kanteen. He collaborates with partners Kent Doobrow of the Doobrow Group and Kev Martin of Adrenaline Marketing, ensuring a comprehensive approach to brand representation.
Personal Life
Mel and Melinda reside in Annandale, VA, enjoying their empty nest as their daughter pursues her college education.
